A torque sensor, otherwise known as a torque transducer, is a device which measures the torque on a rotating system such as a gearbox or driveline. The torque sensor converts a torsional mechanical input into an electrical output signal, showing a component performance which can be monitored using a data logger or data acquisition system.

Torque sensors or torque transducers commonly use strain gauges applied to a rotating shaft. These are generally maintenance free and are accepted as the most accurate method of measuring torque. The signal can be retrieved from the shaft using slip rings, rotary transformers or wireless telemetry (wireless torque sensors). Modern torque sensors often add conditioning electronics and an Analogue to Digital converter (ADC) to the rotating shaft.
