Torque Sensors
A torque sensor, otherwise known as a torque transducer, is a device which measures the torque on a rotating system such as a gearbox or driveline. Torque sensors convert a torsional mechanical input into an electrical output signal, showing a component performance which can be monitored using a data logger or data acquisition system.
Torque sensors or torque transducers commonly use strain gauges applied to a rotating shaft. These are generally maintenance free and are accepted as the most accurate method for measurement of torque. The signal can be retrieved from the shaft using slip rings, rotary transformers or wireless telemetry. Modern torque sensors and torque meters often add conditioning electronics and an Analogue to Digital converter (ADC) to the rotating shaft.
