Speed Sensors
The speed sensor can be used to monitor engine RPM, ABS and traction control/ASC operation, turbo speed, vehicle speed, gear speed and wheel speed.
The speed sensor is mounted close to a metallic toothed wheel/gear. As the wheel turns and each tooth passes the sensor, an AC voltage pulse is induced into the coil inside the sensor. When the wheel speed increases, more pulses are produced and the speed of the component rotation can be calculated from the number of pulses. Speed sensors are among the most vital sensors on the car and are often subjected to extreme operating temperatures and conditions. The mechanical size and shape of speed sensors can vary between application types, however the internal components and operating characteristics of the sensors are generally similar.
