Acceleration Sensors / Accelerometer - A Brief Introduction |
 |
An acceleration sensor, or accelerometer, is an electromechanical device that measures the vibration or acceleration forces on the race car. Useful for monitoring vehicle/chassis dynamics or track mapping, accelerometers are available with single-axis, dual-axis and triple-axis measurements. The three-axis accelerometer is most commonly used in racing, monitoring variables such as ‘inline acceleration’ (accelerating/braking), ‘lateral acceleration’ (turning acceleration) and ‘vertical acceleration’ (gravitational forces). These forces are generally referred to as G-forces, or G-loading. Most teams will be mainly interested in the lateral measurements that will give an indication of the car’s tyre performance through corners.
Accelerometers used in racing have a low-impedance output voltage that will easily interface with most common data loggers and data acquisition systems.
